Boys Basketball vs. Milwaukee Carmen School of Science and Technology NW

In the opening round of the Division 3 state tournament playoffs, the University School boys’ basketball team defeated Milwaukee Carmen Northwest School of Science and Technology NW 91-60 in a Sectional 4 regional game on Tuesday, February 27th at USM.

The Wildcats entered the game as the regional’s 6th seed, while Carmen was seeded 11th.  As expected, the favored Wildcats took an early lead in the contest, but their visitors stayed within striking range for a while.  The Wildcats rebounded well in the defensive end, keeping Carmen from follow-up baskets. Eventually USM went on a 11-0 run and went ahead by double figures.  They never lost that advantage and ended the first half leading by 10 points at 44-34.

The Wildcats dashed further ahead in the second half.  Soon they led by 20 points at 60-40 and they kept going.  Later on, they took a 31-point lead at 74-30 and stayed near a 30-point until the game’s conclusion.

Five different players scored in double figures for USM and every player scored for the winning Wildcats.  Sencere Powell led the team with 24 points.  Mike Wilson scored 13 points; Keegan Kubicki scored 12 points; Calvin Schmeling and Ma’teo Holland score 10 points each. Also scoring for USM were James Graham, who scored 6 points; David Hutton, Greg Farrow, and Tylan Huff, who scored 4 points apiece; and Tripp Grebe and Henry Hartjes, who each scored 2 points.

Sylvester Cutler, USM’s head coach commented on the win, “We were a little sluggish in the first half as we had a hard time dealing with their athleticism. In the second half, we were more disciplined on both ends of the floor, forcing them into tough shots defensively and good execution offensively. I thought our patience on the offensive end helped us get good looks.”

The road gets tougher for USM.  The team must now face the number 3 seed, their arch-rival Brookfield Academy.  BA won both the games the team had in conference play this season. The Wildcats take their 19-4 record to Brookfield Academy to play in a WIAA state tournament Sectional 4 Regional semi-final game at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 2nd.
