Cross Country at the Shorewood Invitational
The University School cross country team competed in the Shorewood Invitational sponsored by Shorewood High School on Friday, October 5th at Lincoln Park Golf Course in Milwaukee. The USM boys team took 4th place in the meet. The USM girls team took 5th place in the meet.
The Wildcats ran against 15 boys teams and 8 girls teams in their final meet before the end of the season tournaments, the Midwest Classic Conference meet at Lake Country Lutheran School in Hartland on October 13th and the Division 2 state tournament’s Shorewood Sectional meet on October 20th at the same venue as Friday’s meet.
Eric Pilling, USM’s head coach, commented on the team’s effort Friday, “We approached this meet as a sub-maximal test run for conference and more specifically for sectionals. We held back in the first mile and kept our team packs tight. The result was perhaps our best team performance of the season for both boys and girls. Our top five boys finished within 14 seconds and this was the first time we have ever had five runners under 18:00.”
Pilling turned to the girls race, saying, “The girls team had by far their best team effort of the season. Lexi Keppler did some pacing with Anna Straszewski early on, and the trio of Kristen Chou, Lucia Rondini and Holly Golvach worked together throughout the whole race. Anna, Holly and Grace had particularly strong performances.”
Pilling concluded his remarks with an optimistic tone, “It was an encouraging meet going into the championship portion of the season. We got the feedback we needed and the team is coalescing at the perfect time.”
The boys’ race had 251 runners racing at Lincoln Park. USM’s top five runners all finished in the top 28. Ishan Kuttickat led the USM contingent. He finished in 17th place, completing the 5 Kilometer distance in 17:53. Drew Stephens took 21st place with a time of 17:51. George Graham had a time of 17:56 good enough for 26th place. Donn Rhys Mondano took 27th place with the same time. Ryan Treptow finished right behind his teammates, placing 28th at 17:57. Duncan Petri also ran, finishing in 33rd place at 18:09, and Thomas Stephens ended in 61st place with a time of 19:07.
Lexi Keppler led the USM girls runners. In a race with 150 runners, Keppler finished 6th with a time of 21:08. Straszewski took 11th place with a time of 21:34. Chou finished 30th at 23:06. Golvah was 33rd with a time of 23:11. Rondini finished in 35th place with a time of 23:19. Grace Leverett and Caileigh Wine also ran for USM. Leverett finished in 42nd place at 24:12. Wine was right behind in 43rd place at 24:31.
