Volleyball vs. The Prairie School
In a good test to prepare for the upcoming end of the season tournaments, the University School girls’ volleyball team lost to The Prairie School 3-0 in a non-conference match on Saturday, October 6th at USM.
The two teams entered the match in second place in their respective conferences, and each had strong records and hopes for state tournament playoff successes. The visiting Hawks swooped in and captured the match, handing the Wildcats just their second loss of the season as a result.
The Prairie School won the first set by a 25-15 score. The Wildcats gave their visitors a tougher time in the second set, but the Hawks still won it, 25-22. The Hawks then won the final set and the match with a 25-19 victory.
“Not the match we wanted to play tonight,” said Sue Baker, USM’s head coach. “The girls came out slow, our passing was off all night, our blockers didn’t control the net, and we just didn’t communicate well on the court. Prairie has a nice team. They hustle after balls, they find holes on the court, and they passed well. We have to have all aspects of the game clicking to beat good teams. It’s frustrating as we are the better team, but we just weren’t the better team tonight. Our girls have to learn how to handle pressure. They have to figure out that when you give away 1 point, you need to turn the ball to your favor on the next play. Tonight, we would give them a point, and then it would end up turning into four or five more points before we could side out.”
Looking ahead, Baker added, “We need to get rid of this game, and now focus on our final conference game on Monday. In order to share a part of the conference title, we need to come away with a win. We will be fine. The girls will overcome this adversity, and we will figure out a way to get back on track.”
USM is 24-2 and 6-1 in the Midwest Classic Conference. The Wildcats play Brookfield Academy in a Midwest Classic Conference match on Monday, October 8th at USM.
