Football vs. Living Word Lutheran
The University School and Living Word Lutheran football teams slipped and slid on a soaked and muddy field as they played in a Midwest Classic Conference game on Saturday, October 6th at Living Word Lutheran High School in Jackson. The Timberwolves celebrated their homecoming by defeating USM 27-13.
Despite the sloppy grounds Living Word Lutheran’s runners gained 240 yards in 40 rushing plays. The Timberwolves’ quarterback, Sam Crook also completed 7 of 11 passes for 54 yards, bringing the tam’s total yards gained to 294.
USM gained only 99 total yards. CJ Boyd completed 6 of 18 passes for a total of 110 yards. Two of his passes, a 30 yarder to David Mock and a 24 yard throw to to Tripp Grebe, accounted for USM’s two touchdowns. The Wildcats could not get a running game going. They actually lost 11 yards rushing. USM also turned the ball over three times on a fumble and two interceptions. Living Word Lutheran lost the ball just once on a fumble.
The Timberwolves scored on their first possession. MJ Woods put the Timberwolves ahead with a 55 yard touchdown run with 2:21 into the first quarter. Luke Frinzi added the extra point to make it 7-0.
Early in the second quarter, Boyd completed two long passes to Mock, the final one for the 30 yard touchdown at 6:04. Kyler Ringgold added the extra point to tie the game at 7-7.
The Timberwolves went back ahead later in the quarter. Woods scored on a 30 yard run. The extra point try was no good, but Living Word Lutheran held the lead with 5:45 left in the half.
USM tied the score again early in the second half. Keegan Kubicki returned the half’s opening kickoff for 56 yards. On the next play, Boyd threw to Grebe for a 24 yard touchdown. The extra point attempt was no good. It was 13-13 with 10:25 left in the quarter.
The Timberwolves took over after that. They used 10 plays, culminating in an 11 yard touchdown run by Woods with 6:06 remaining in the quarter. Frinzi kicked the extra point to make it 20-13.
USM could not get anything going after that. Living Word Lutheran scored the game’s final touchdown with 11:01 left in the fourth quarter on a 12 yard touchdown run by Woods.
The Timberwolves defense tightened and kept the Wildcats underfoot in the muddy muck for the remainder of the game.
After the game, USM’s head coach Brian Sommers shook his head. He said, “It was a fun football game. We knew they had the experience and talent and that we would be challenged. We had to play a detailed game, which we didn’t. We made mistakes and the field conditions were not good at all. It was still a learning experience for our guys. We have one game left at home next week. We don’t know if we’ll play after that. It’s out of our hands.”
The loss left USM with a 2-5 overall record and a 2-3 mark in the Midwest Classic Conference. The Wildcats conclude their regular season when they host St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy in a Midwest Classic Conference game at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 12th.
