Boys Soccer vs. Shoreland Lutheran
As you’d expect, a sectional semi-final should be close. That’s how it was in in the sectional semi-final game of the WIAA Division 4 state boys’ soccer tournament on Thursday, October 25th at University School. The game was so close that the University School Wildcats and Shoreland Lutheran Pacers had to go into overtime to decide the outcome. USM scored two goals in the two extra ten-minute periods to defeat the Pacers, 4-2.
Jock Mutschler, USM’s head coach, had some thoughts about the game. He said, “What an emotional rollercoaster. There weren't many scoring opportunities in this match, but the boys, to their credit, converted on more of them than the Pacers did. The boys played with a poise and surety throughout the match. Despite the twists and turns, adversity and jubilation, they keep a good work rate and organized well throughout the match. The team was fit enough to pull off two consecutive ‘ten minute drills in overtime to secure the victory.”
As Mutschler noted, much of the game was played without shots. USM took 14 shots in regulation and 3 more in the two overtime periods. Shoreland Lutheran took 18 in regulation and 5 in OT.
Both Kaiden Love, the Pacers’ goalkeeper, and Evan Bolton, USM’s keeper, made 8 saves in the game, showing how close the game actually was. When Bolton had to leave the game briefly following a card for a delay of game, Hadi Najeeb stepped in and played for USM. Najeeb did not have to make any saves during his short stint.
Mutschler noted, “Evan kept his composure and returned to the match quickly after receiving a rather dubious delay of game infraction. I would like to think he visualized quickly while on the sidelines to return to a steady state equilibrium.”
The Wildcats, who were the number 1 seed, were the first to make one of their shots count on the scoreboard. Off a short corner play, Donny Jones received the ball and sent a ball through the air toward the pacers’ net. Matias Dermond leaped and headed the ball into the net at 15:34.
Shoreland Lutheran, who came in as the 5th seeded team in the sectional, tied the score early in the second half. Brandon Freitag headed a free kick past Bolton at 48:31 to make the score 1-1.
Jones gave USM another lead at 71:53 when he scored on a penalty kick.
The Pacers played with determination after USM went ahead. Their efforts came to fruition with less than five minutes remaining in regulation time. TJ Wojciechowski headed a loose ball into the Wildcats’ net after a free kick had caromed off the USM wall to him.
Wojciechowski’s shot tied the score at 2-2 at 86:21 and forced the game into overtime.
The Wildcats scored the eventual winner at 94:27. Jones trapped the ball, spun, and fired an off angle shot into the left side of the Pacers’ goal.
USM kept at it and added another goal at 105:31 when Keise Prewitt tapped in a deflection to secure the victory for the home team.
USM is now 15-2-1. The Wildcats move on to play Racine St. Catherine’s in a Sectional Final of the WIAA Division 4 state tournament at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 27th at The Prairie School in Racine.
