Wrestling at the State Tournament
Da’jun Johnson is a state champion. Johnson, a senior who wrestles for the Whitefish Bay/Dominican/University School team, won the 160 pound weight class championship in the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament in Madison on Saturday, February 23rd. He secured the state title by defeating Bryant Schauf of Sauk Prairie in a 7-4 decision.
His victory was the first state wrestling championship win in the history of the wrestling program at Whitefish Bay as well as for the co-op team that Whitefish Bay is now part of along with Dominican and USM.
Johnson won all 40 matches in which he competed during the season. He completed his undefeated season with four wins at the state tournament.
Johnson defeated Reese Dutton of Kenosha Tremper by fall at 5:18 in the tournament’s opening round on Thursday afternoon.
Johnson moved into the quarterfinal match where he took on Nick Starich of Pewaukee on Friday morning. Johnson pinned Starich at 2:58 to advance to the semi-finals on Friday afternoon.
Johnson took on Eau Claire North’s Carter Duerkop in the semi-finals. The match was close, but Johnson prevailed, winning by a 4-3 decision to head to the tournament’s Finals to determine the state champion.
In the finals on Saturday afternoon, Johnson defeated Schauf to take the championship medal and the trophy for Whitefish Bay/Dominican/USM.
