Boys Basketball vs. Dominican

The University School boys’ basketball team ended the 2018-2019 season by losing to Dominican 78-65 in a Regional Final game of the Brown Deer Sectional in the WIAA Division 3 state tournament playoffs on Friday, March 1st at Dominican High School in Whitefish Bay.

“Not the result we hoped for,” said Sylvester Cutler, USM’s head coach, after the season ending loss. “But I am incredibly proud of the way we competed throughout this game. Turnovers in the second half were the difference down the stretch, but I felt we hung tough with a solid opponent. The heart and toughness of this team was on full display last night, and they definitely have set a new standard. Special thanks to our seniors for all their contributions to this program. This was a special group who helped elevate our program to new heights and have laid a solid foundation for the next wave of players to build upon.”

The first half displayed the difference between the Knights, the regional’s third-seeded team, and the Wildcats who were seeded sixth.  The height of the Dominican players kept the Wildcats’ shooters to the outside.  At the other end of the court, the Knights scored most of their points from within the key.

The half was close.  At the very first, the lead changed hands.  The Wildcats took the lead at 9-7 on a three-point shot by Tylan Huff and pushed further ahead on another three-pointer by Keegan Kubicki.  USM held the lead until there was 5:45 left in the half when Dominican retied the score at 23-23.  Dominican pushed ahead but another three by Kubicki as well as another three by Huff and USM was able to take a slim 32-31 lead at half time.

In the first half, 24 of USM’s points came on three point shots.  USM’s three captains, Kubicki, Huff and Henry Hartjes scored them.  Kubicki canned 4, Huff, 3 and Hartjes, 1.

The Knights showed why they were the higher seeded team in the second half.  They re-took the lead on a jumper from underneath the basket by Alex Antetokounmpo. Two steals and fast-breaks, which led to another four points by Antetokounmpo on a close in jumper and then a dunk shot, helped the Knights push further ahead.

USM tied it once again at 41-41 on another three point shot by Ma’Teo Holland.

The Knights then went on a 19-4 run to take control of the game. They maintained a double digit lead for the rest of the game to advance in the playoffs.

Kubicki led the Wildcats in scoring with 23 points; Huff scored 16 points; Ma’Teo Holland scored 9 points; Hartjes and Greg Farrow each scored 5 points; Chris Boyd, Jr. scored 4 points; and Dalan Henderson scored 3 points for USM.

The loss ended the Wildcats’ season. They finished with a winning record of 13-10 and at 10-4 in the Midwest Classic Conference.
