Boys Tennis at the WIAA Individual State Tournament

University School senior Daniel Taleghani won third place in singles in the WIAA Division 2 Individual State Tournament on Thursday, May 30, Friday, May 31st and Saturday, June 1st at the University of Wisconsin’s Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison. 

Matt Cooper and Addison Elliot in doubles, joined Taleghani as representatives the University School boys’ tennis team in the individual state meet. Cooper and Elliot teamed together to play in the Division 2 doubles competition. 

Taleghani entered the tournament’s singles competition as the third seed.  The seeding gave him a first round bye. In the second round on Friday morning, Taleghani beat J.V. Steckart of Notre Dame de la Baie, 6-1, 6-0.  Taleghani won a tough quarterfinal match against Johnny Horak of Xavier.  His winning score of 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-4 allowed him to move into the semifinals. In the semifinal match against Madison Edgewood’s Alex Sviatoslavsky, Taleghani lost 3-6, 3-6.  Finally, in the battle for third place on Saturday afternoon, Taleghani took on Myles Krezwinski of Notre Dame de la Baie.  Taleghani lost the first set 2-6.  He then rallied and won the final two sets, each by the same 6-3 score.  As a result, Taleghani finished the season as the third best singles player in the state of Wisconsin. 

Cooper, a senior, and Elliott, a junior, were seeded sixth in the tournament. They opened play on Thursday evening by defeating Connor Young and Logan Oestreich of Rhinelander, 6-0, 6-3. They advanced to the quarterfinals by beating La Crosse Logan’s Jonathan Marcou and Sam Novak, 6-2, 6-1 early Friday afternoon. Cooper and Elliott were unable to make it further in the championship bracket. With little rest, they then played in the quarterfinals.  They lost to Kelby Mack and Noah Wankerl of Sauk Prairie, 2-6, 1-6.  On Saturday morning, Cooper and Elliott succumbed to Ryan Matoska and Elijah Krause of Catholic Memorial 2-6, 6-7(0).

The Individual State Tournament’s completion ended the 2019 boys tennis season for the USM team.
