Girls Soccer vs. Brookfield Academy

The University School girls’ soccer team ended the season on a down note on Monday, June 3rd.  The Wildcats lost to Brookfield Academy 5-0 in a Regional Final of the WIAA Division 4 state tournament’s Racine Prairie Sectional at Brookfield Academy.

The two Midwest Classic Conference rivals played in their second match in just over a month. They competed in a conference game on May 1st.  BA won the May game, 4-0.

Although the score was similar on Monday, the game’s play had a decidedly different tone, especially in the first half.  The game in May was dominated by the Blue Knights; they scored two goals in the opening ten minutes. Monday, however, the play was far more equal.  The two defenses marked tightly and kept the score at 0-0 until the last five minutes of the opening half; the action went back and forth and each team had good opportunities. The Wildcats took six shots in those first 45 minutes, one more than they took in the whole 90 minutes back in May. Anneke Zaiser, BA’s goalie, had to stop five of them.  Zaiser ended up making 12 saves in the game.  Lana Stone, USM’s goalkeeper, made a total of 10 saves.

BA did score one goal in the first half.  Taking a corner kick, Adrianna Koveck sent the ball into the goalie box.  The Wildcats cleared toward the same corner. Koveck retrieved the ball and once again sent a cross into the goalie area.  Brianna Sauer stopped it and knocked it past Stone at 40:30.

The two teams played competitively in the second half, but the Blue Knights did all the scoring. At 50:00, Marie Major intercepted a Wildcat clear from the USM penalty area.  She quickly booted it back and the ball bounded inside the post to make it 2-0.

BA scored again less than two minutes later. Major got the ball in the midfield area and burst toward the USM end.  She slotted a pass to Lizzy Elfelt who one-touched a shot into the net at 51:42.

The Blue Knights made it 4-0 at 72:29 when midfielder Erina Weiss gained control of the ball in the BA half of the field.  She raced down the field.  As she ran into the USM penalty area she fired and scored.

The final goal was an own-goal on USM when Weiss took a corner kick and the ball bounced off a USM defender.

BA is now 10-2-2. The Blue Knights head further into the WIAA D4 playoffs.  They play Kenosha St. Joseph in a WIAA Division 4 state tournament Racine Prairie Sectional Semi-Final on Thursday June 6th

The loss ended the Wildcats’ season. USM’s final record was 8-5-1. The Wildcats finished at 3-2 in the Midwest Classic Conference.
