Volleyball at the New Berlin West Invitational

The University School girls’ volleyball team played in the New Berlin West invitational at New Berlin West High School on Saturday, September 7th.

The Wildcats entered the invitational with an undefeated match record, but they were facing some tough teams in New Berlin.  They won their first match of the day, beating Waukesha North in a close match, 2-0.  The Wildcats won the first game 25-22 and the second 25-18.

The Wildcats suffered their first defeat of the season in the second-round match of pool play.  They defeated Appleton East in the first game of the match by a score of 25-17.  They nearly won the second game but eventually succumbed by 24-26.  They then lost the deciding third match, 13-15.

USM then played another Midwest Classic Conference team, Lake Country Lutheran.  USM lost the match, 2-0 by game scores of 9-25 and 16-25.

The Wildcats faced their host, New Berlin West, in their final match of the day.  New Berlin West won 2-0 by game scores of 25-17 and 25-21.

Sue Baker, USM’s head coached detailed the way the Wildcats played in the invitational, “It was an up and down day today at New Berlin West. We started the day out with a win against Waukesha North. Even though we won, we didn’t play the way we are capable of playing. Lots of unforced errors and not a lot of energy. Three of our girls were under the weather, and when you only have nine players total that takes its toll. The fortunate thing was we played better than they did and had fewer errors than them.

“We hoped that we would come out stronger in match two, but again not on all cylinders. We took game 1 against Appleton East in which we did some good things, but then fell behind quickly in game 2 and even though we came back and played point for point to the end, we again had too many errors on our side of the net to capture the win.

“In our final match of pool play, we faced conference opponent in Lake Country Lutheran. We just couldn’t get into rhythm. The girls were tired, we didn’t communicate with each other, and we just looked like we were not fully there to play.

“We then went into a crossover match with New Berlin West. We were definitely the better team, but again we had just too many unforced errors.

“It was good to play in a tournament like this against much bigger schools and better teams to see what we need to work on. We have many things to work on, and we will get better. We also have a quick turn around with Prairie on Monday and then two conference matches on Tuesday and Thursday, but it will be great to be back home next week for a few matches.”

USM is 10-3 and 0-0 in the Midwest Classic Conference.  The Wildcats begin a tough week on Monday, September 9th.  They play matches on three of four straight days. On Monday they take on The Prairie School in a non-conference match at The Prairie School in Racine at 6:45 p.m;  they play HOPE Christian in a Midwest Classic Conference match on Tuesday at USM; and they play Heritage Christian in a conference match on Thursday at USM.
