Girls Basketball vs. University Lake School
The University School girls’ basketball team opened the 2019-2020 season by defeating University Lake School 67-20 in a non-conference game on Wednesday, November 20th at University Lake School in Hartland.
“What a great way to start the season,” said Jason Strains, USM’s head coach. “Mya Hartjes set the tone in her varsity debut. She controlled the game, passed the ball well, and was excellent defensively. Molly Janssen played phenomenal defense and made several excellent passes as well. Aidanne DePoy’s rebounding and scoring were vital as well. Dara Omoloja was incredible on the boards, recording 12 rebounds. All in all, I was happy to see everyone contribute to our first win.”
As Strains indicated, the Wildcats got their season off to a fine start and their team play gave a good indication of their potential this season. The Wildcats were victorious as a team. Nine different players scored for USM. DePoy alone outscored the whole opposing ULS team. The senior began her fourth year on the team by scoring 24 points. Playing in her first varsity game, freshman Hartjes scored 11 points; sophomore Molly Janssen scored 10 points; Janssen’s older sister, Taylor, a senior, scored 5 points, as did senior Gaelle Marolda; senior Kennedy Perez scored 4 points; sophomore Dara Omoloja also scored 4 points; Dara’s senior sister Tunmi Omoloja scored 2 points; and junior Sydney Matthews scored 2 points as well. Hartjes and Taylor Janssen each scored on a three-point shot.
During the game, USM’s players pulled down 19 offensive rebounds, which allowed them plenty of opportunities to put shots up again and again. The Wildcats also had 12 defensive rebounds when they allowed the Lakers’ shooters to get off shots.
All three of USM’s captains were enthused by the team’s opening game play. DePoy commented, “The game was an amazing start for our season. We came out strong, and we all worked together in order to bring the win home. We all are excited for the season and we can’t wait to see what else we are capable of as a team.”
Taylor Janssen said, “It was a great start to the season. We are already connecting on certain plays and figuring out how to play with each other. Although we still have a long way to go, this being our first game made us even more excited for this season.”
USM is 1-0 and 0-0 in the Midwest Classic Conference. The Wildcats will face a tougher test in their next game. They return to Hartland to play Lake Country Lutheran in their opening Midwest Classic Conference contest at 7:15 p.m. on Friday, November 22nd at Lake Country Lutheran School.
