Girls Basketball vs. Racine St. Catherine's
In a game played on the verge of the Thanksgiving holiday break, the University School girls’ basketball team had much to give thanks for. The Wildcats finished a string of road games that opened their season by defeating Racine St. Catherine’s 48-33 in a non-conference game on Tuesday, November 26th at St. Catherine’s High School in Racine.
The game started slowly for the Wildcats, but they bided their time, awaiting their opportunities. When those arrived, they took advantage. They moved ahead and took an eleven-point lead at 24-13 by halftime. The Wildcats held on in the second half as St. Catherine’s made a run. USM stayed strong and returned home for Thanksgiving with a well-earned win.
Jason Strains, USM’s head coach explained, “While we had a few players out with injury, everyone stepped up defensively for a great win. Molly Janssen played a fantastic game on both sides of the ball.”
Only four players scored for USM. Sophomore Molly Janssen led the Wildcats in the game with 21 points. Senior Aidanne DePoy scored 12 points; freshman Mya Hartjes scored 11 points; and senior Taylor Janssen, Molly’s sister, scored 4 points for the winners.
Hartjes, a guard, hit 3 three-point shots in the game. Molly Janssen also scored on 1 from beyond the arch.
DePoy, who is one of USM’s captains, commented on the win, “It’s been a while since we have beaten a team in the Metro Classic Conference. We came out strong and worked really hard to get stops on defense. And although we struggled at the beginning, we were able to work around their defense. It wasn’t a perfect game but it was a strong win.”
Senior Tunmi Omoloja, another of USM’s captains, added, “Both teams played really hard and didn’t allow the aggression of the other team get to them. Although getting the win was harder than expected, and the game was slower than usual, we continued to show St. Catherine’s that we didn’t come to give up so easily.”
Happy after the win the third straight road game, Strains looked ahead, “We are excited for our home opener on Tuesday.”
USM is 2-1 and 0-1 in the Midwest Classic Conference. The Wildcats are ready to play in front of their home fans. They play St. Thomas More in a non-conference game at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, December 3rd at USM.
