Girls Basketball vs. Carmen Northwest
The University School girls’ basketball team defeated Milwaukee Carmen Northwest 58-41 in an opening round Regional game of the WIAA Division 3 state tournament’s Brown Deer Sectional on Tuesday, February 25th at USM.
Carmen entered the game with a 7-10 record as the regional’s number 9 seed. The 8th seeded Wildcats had a 12-10 record on the line.
Aidanne DePoy, one of USM’s captains, commented on what happened, “It was a tough game at the start because we weren’t playing up to our ability as a team. But we came out strong in the second half and really worked to get a lead and keep it. It was also a fun game because everyone got in and got some playing time. We are so excited that we get to play Lake Mills on Friday.”
As DePoy noted, the game got off to as slow start. The Wildcat shooters had difficulty finding their range, but USM’s aggressive defense also gave Carmen trouble, so scoring stayed low in the opening minutes.
Eventually USM’s Mya Hartjes hit one of her signature three-point shots, and the Wildcats broke loose. They built a solid lead, and at one point they led by 13 points at 19-6.
But it was the playoffs, and Carmen had come to compete. The visitors went on a 13-2 run and closed to within a basket as the seconds on the clock ticked down. The Wildcats held them off at the very end of the half, which ended with USM ahead, 23-19.
The Wildcats played with more confidence in the second half. They played fundamental team basketball. They made good choices and hit their shots more consistently. They slowly built a double-digit lead; they did not let their opponents back into the game.
Hartjes led USM in scoring with 17 points; Molly Janssen scored 10 points; DePoy scored 8 points; Kennedy Perez and Sydney Matthews each scored 6 points; Tunmi Omoloja scored 5 points; Veronica Castro scored 4 points; and Gaelle Marolda scored 2 points in the victory.
After the game, USM’s head coach, Jason Strains, commented on the team’s post-season success, “While we struggled at times in this one, we got a win in the first round of the playoffs, and that’s always a big deal. We had contributions from lots of players in this one, which was definitely a positive sign as we look ahead to Lake Mills on Friday.”
Lake Mills is the regional’s number 1 seed. The L-Cats will be rested after receiving a bye in the tournament’s opening round. But the Wildcats now have momentum and plan to upset their hosts in the second round Regional game of the WIAA Division 3 Brown Deer Sectional. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 28th at Lake Mills High School.
