Boys Basketball vs. Saint Anthony
The University School boys’ basketball team defeated Saint Anthony 75-30 in an opening round Regional game of the WIAA Division 3 Sectional 4 state basketball tournament on Tuesday, March 3rd at USM.
The Wildcats entered the game as the regional’s seventh seed, while the Roman Legion came to USM seeded tenth.
Based on the game’s play, USM clearly deserved the higher seed. Chris Powell scored on the Wildcats’ first shot of the game, and USM never trailed after that. The Wildcats used a tight defense that consistently kept their visitors to the outside, where the Roman Legion needed catapults to launch their shots.
Once they had a 7-0 lead, the Wildcats did concede a three-point shot; however, they soon went ahead by double digits and led at halftime by 27 points at 49-22.
The Wildcats kept it up through the final 18 minutes, winning the second half by a 26-8 margin.
Greg Farrow led the USM players in scoring. He scored 27 points; Jacob Gold scored 13 points; Chris Powell scored 9 points; Kai Bartl and John Walters each scored 8 points; Zadan Mason scored 4 points; Caleb Kiehnau scored 3 points; Noah Dillard scored 2 points; and Bennett Brodsky scored 1 point for the winners.
USM’s large lead allowed the Wildcats to get plenty of players into the game and rest their starters for future playoff encounters when the action will be more intense.
“We’re happy to pick up this first round win,” said Sylvester Cutler, USM’s head coach. “We had a great stat line for the night, but I was most happy with how disciplined we were in executing our game plan. We are looking forward to a tough matchup on Friday.”
USM is now 11-12. As Cutler indicated, the Wildcats do have a tougher playoff task ahead. They take on Kettle Moraine Lutheran, the regional’s number 2 seed, in a Regional Semifinal game of the WIAA Division 3 Sectional 4 state basketball tournament at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 6th at Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School in Jackson.
