Boys Basketball vs. Kettle Moraine Lutheran

The season came to a close for the University School boys’ basketball team when the Wildcats lost to Kettle Moraine Lutheran 96-76 in a Regional Final game of the WIAA Division 3 Sectional 4 state basketball tournament on Friday, March 6th at Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School in Jackson.

Based on the regional’s seedings, the Wildcats were the underdog.  Kettle Moraine Lutheran came into the game seeded second in the regional while USM was seeded seventh.   The Chargers made it clear that they deserved the higher seed.

The Wildcats leaped to the lead in the game’s opening minutes, but they could not hold it.  After Kettle Moraine Lutheran’s Austin Schaff sank a three-point shot with just under 14 minutes left in the first half to tie the game at 11-11, the Chargers raced away.  They soon led by double digits, including a fourteen-point lead at 31-17 with 6:40 left.

The Wildcats began to chip away at the point differential.  In the half’s final three minutes, they outscored the Chargers 11-3 to pull within three points at halftime, when the score was KML 45, USM 41.

USM tied the game at 46-46 when Greg Farrow sank a three-point shot with 16:40 left in the second half and took a brief lead when Kai Bartl dropped through a free throw a minute later to make it 47-46, USM.

The Chargers then went on a 13-4 run and eventually took a double-digit lead once again.  Kettle Moraine Lutheran maintained a significant lead through the remainder of the game, outscoring USM 52-35 in the final half.  The Chargers earned the victory, which ended the season for USM.

As he did in many games during the season, Greg Farrow led USM in scoring against Kettle Moraine Lutheran.  Farrow scored 33 points; Chris Powell scored 15 points; CJ Boyd scored 11 points; Kai Bartl scored 9 points; and Jacob Gold scored 8 points.

After the loss, USM’s head coach, Sylvester Cutler reflected, “I’m proud of the effort of this group tonight and all season. We played a very challenging schedule and at many points this season displayed our potential. We left it all on the floor; we played with energy, we played with passion. We just played a very disciplined and veteran team, and that was the key difference. I want to thank our three seniors – Greg (Farrow), Caleb (Kiehnau), and Jacob (Gold) for their leadership and commitment to this program. We definitely have a bright future as most of these guys will return next season. Our goal will be to approach next season with an eye to getting back to this game and winning it.”

As a result of the loss, the Wildcats finished 2019-2020 with a record of 11-13.
