Girls Tennis vs. Whitefish Bay

The University School girls’ tennis team came close, but the Wildcats lost to Division 1 powerhouse, Whitefish Bay, 4-3 in a dual meet held Tuesday, August 25th at Whitefish Bay High School.

Each of the three matches that the Wildcats won was decided in a third tie-breaker set.  Senior Kala Siddalingaiah and her junior partner, Becca Daskal, won the one doubles match; senior Audrey Treptow won the two singles match; and sophomore Neomi Spellman won the four singles match.

USM’s coach, Matt Flack was pleased with the Wildcats’ performance, saying, “The girls played really well. At times the pace of the ball may have been a bit too much for some of our girls, but they gritted it out and played a tough Whitefish Bay opponent to a close three-four loss. Kala and Rebecca were overjoyed at beating Whitefish Bay in three sets as was Neomi in three sets and Audrey in three sets. Those three wins show how tough our girls are. Everyone played very well, and I am proud of our girls.”

Siddalingaiah showed the team’s resilience when she commented on the one doubles’ victory, “Becca and I came into our match with a determined mindset right off the bat, mainly because we have never beaten Whitefish Bay as a doubles team. The match was intense from the start. We won the first set but lost the second. It was all down to the tie-breaker. We pulled out the win. The realization hit us hard when we were gathering our things. We finally won. It felt really good to say.”

Despite the three wins, the Wildcats did lose four matches against Whitefish Bay; and, therefore,  the team match. Senior Maahum Jan lost the one singles contest; junior Divya Pandey lost the three singles match; Isabel Werner and Beatrice Laterman lost at two doubles; and senior Karly Francis and sophomore Jessi Marcus lost at three doubles.

Treptow gave note to the play of some of her teammates, “I’d like to shout out Neomi on beating a D1 team in her fourth match of the season. Also, three doubles played an extremely long match. Although they ultimately lost, Jessi Marcus was playing extremely well at net, and Karly Francis had some really nice returns.”

The Wildcats hope to continue their strong play. The University School girls’ tennis team plays Watertown Luther Prep, a Division 2 team, in a dual meet at USM beginning at 4:00 p.m on Thursday, August 27.
