Girls Tennis at the Sweet Sixteen
The University School girls’ tennis team competed in the annual Sweet Sixteen Tournament hosted by Nicolet High School on Friday, September 11th and Saturday, September 12th at USM, Nicolet High School, and Whitefish Bay High School. The Wildcats lost to Divine Savior Holy Angels 6-1 on Friday. The matches on Saturday were canceled due to rain.
The Sweet 16 is always a challenge for the Wildcats. USM is a Division 2 team and most of the other teams in the tournament are D1, and many are amongst the best in the division. The Wildcats play in the tournament each year to face the best they can. The competition gets them ready for the Division 2 state tournament at the end of the month.
DSHA is certainly a powerful team and the Dashers gave the Wildcats their toughest match of the season so far.
Senior Audrey Treptow, one of USM’s captains, commented on the Wildcats’ effort against DSHA, “The DSHA match final score of 1-6 didn’t reflect the tenacity in which our players fought. Neomi Spellman managed to get into a tiebreaker for the third set and two doubles played a long and close match against their opponents. Divya Pandey, who managed to win the first set worried us when she lost the second. In a brutal ten-point tiebreaker, Divya pulled out the only win of the match.”
As Treptow noted, Pandey’s match was long, and her teammates were able to rally behind her in the final crucial moments. Pandey, a junior, described her win in the 3-singles match against DSHA freshman, Madi Guillermo, “The final score of my match was 6-4, 5-7, and the tiebreaker score was 10-7. It was a very tiring match, and she hit some pretty hard shots, so it was hard to keep up with her. I really tried to stay consistent, which I think overall helped me win the match. I had a lot of chances to win, so I got very anxious when we had to go to a third-set tiebreaker. But I was very relieved when the match finished. The cheering definitely helped keep up my morale.”
The Dashers won all the other matches. Playing in the 1 singles match, freshman Carolyn Schaefer defeated USM senior Maahum Jan, 6-0, 6-0. DSHA junior Alex Moews beat Treptow 6-0, 6-0 in 2 singles. In the 4 singles match, sophomore Tobi Dahm of DSHA defeated USM sophomore Neomi Spellman, 6-0, 4-6, 10-7.
In the doubles’ competition, seniors Delanie Dahm and Kate Spielbauer defeated USM senior Kala Siddalingaiah and junior Becca Daskal in the 1 doubles match by a score of 6-3, 6-2. In 2 doubles, DSHA seniors Emily Martin and Julia Cyganiak beat USM freshmen Beatrice Laterman and Isabel Werner, 6-1, 6-2. In 3 doubles, freshman Molly Jex and junior Lailah Young of DSHA defeated USM sophomore Jessi Marcus and junior Rachael Schneck, 7-5, 6-2.
The Wildcats play Brookfield Academy, a solid Division 2 rival, in a dual meet on Thursday, September 17th at Brookfield Academy beginning at 4:00 p.m.
