Volleyball vs. Living Word Lutheran

The University School girls’ volleyball team lost to Living Word Lutheran, 3-0, in a Midwest Classic Conference match on Monday, October 12th at Living Word Lutheran High School in Jackson.

The two teams entered the match competing for third place in the Midwest Classic Conference. The host Timberwolves were not about to let their visitors from USM take anything away from them.  The Timberwolves made sure of their position, forcing the Wildcats out of their game from the start.  They took control in the first game, winning it 25-17.  They stayed sturdy and secured the second game by a strong 25-10 score.  The Wildcats played better in the third game, but Living Word Lutheran made sure it was the final game of the night by winning it, 25-21, making the journey back from Jackson even longer for the Wildcats.

“Tough loss tonight,” lamented Sue Baker, USM’s coach. “We just made too many mistakes. They didn’t beat us; we beat ourselves. From the onset of the warm-ups, I felt we were out of sync. You can’t make mistakes and beat teams. We need to find ways to get out of our own heads. One mistake led to another tonight. We have regionals starting next week and this type of play will not get us too far.”

Baker focused on the future, adding, “We are far better than what we put on the floor tonight and we will come back tomorrow and Wednesday at practice and work on the things that we are struggling with. Our highlights were two of our captains, Abbie Stigler and Grace Lord, who combined for 15 kills and 17 assists. We need to have this type of output from the entire team. I know we will come ready to focus tomorrow and get ready for our rematch with BA on Thursday night.”

USM is 3-3 and 3-3 in the Midwest Classic Conference.  As their coach noted, the Wildcats play Brookfield Academy, a conference rival that the Wildcats defeated earlier in the season, in a Midwest Classic Conference match at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 15th at Brookfield Academy.
