Girls Swimming at the WIAA Sectional Meet

The Brown Deer/University School girls swimming and diving team took 6th place in the Whitefish Bay Sectional of the WIAA Division 2 State Tournament on Friday, November 6th and Saturday, November 7th at Whitefish Bay High School.

The 6th place finish precluded the full BD/USM from advancing to the State Championship meet at the Waukesha South Natatorium on Friday, November 13th.  However, several members of the team will advance to the championship meet.

BD/USM will be led by Lucy Art.  She qualified for state in three different events.

Art’s best finish at the sectional meet was in the 50-yard Freestyle race.  She placed second in the event with a time of 25.62 seconds, which was low enough to qualify for the state meet.

Art’s time of 1:00.97 in the 100-yard Butterfly event also gained her a chance to compete in the state meet.  She placed 5th in the sectional race.

The BD/USM quartet of Art, Rosa Rivera, Mira Giles-Pufahl, and Ingrid Lofgren made it to state in the 200-yard Freestyle event.  The four qualified by finishing 6th in the sectional race with a time of 1:47.20.

BD/USM placed two divers in the state meet as well. At the sectional competition, Maddie Miracle took 7th place with a total of 368.70 points.  Anna Staples was right behind her in 8th place.  Staples had a total of 359.30 points.

Showing her excitement about going to the state championships, Art said, “The road to state has been very hard, especially this year with COVID-19, but I’m so proud of our whole team. We worked so hard this season and thanks to our coaches pushing us to improve every practice, it paid off. We are so thankful to have the best coaches; we couldn’t have gotten this far without them.

Art added, “Going to state feels so surreal for all of us. I am so excited to swim my favorite events, the 50 freestyle and 100 Butterfly, but overall I am excited that I get to swim with my teammates, Rosa, Mira, and Ingrid in our 200 Freestyle Relay. I think I can speak for everyone going to state when I say we are nervous, but the excitement surrounding the whole event makes up for it.”

The members of the Brown Deer/University School girls swimming and diving team who qualified as individuals will compete in the Division 2 State Championship meet on Friday, November 13th at the Waukesha South Natatorium. The diving competition is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. The swimming meet is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
